Cyclist safety is a top priority for Dublin Bus

Published on Wednesday, August 24, 2016

Hello and welcome to Network News.

Cyclist safety has always formed part of our driver training processes and recently we launched our new training video that aims to further increase driver awareness around cyclist safety. We want to highlight the need for caution and care when it comes to sharing road space with cyclists while also  creating a better understanding of cyclist behaviours in an urban environment. This video will help ensure our drivers are better equipped in dealing with varied scenarios as they arise. The video has a fun tone but a serious message and covers all areas of cyclist awareness and safety, teaching drivers about best safety practice. Inspired by the esteemed braodcaster and naturalist David Attenborough, the video depicts an ‘Urban Jungle’ where the bus and cyclist must coexist as one.

As the largest public service transport provider in Ireland, we are the lifeblood of the capital, moving people around Dublin to where they need to go. We carry 61% of all passengers on public transport into the city centre, have 110 routes and last year we undertook 122 million customer journeys. Therefore, it is our responsibility to ensure that our drivers are equipped with the best training methods to keep both them and other road users safe.

We share Dublin’s streets with other users and cyclists are some of the most vulnerable road users.  At peak times there are approximately 900 buses and 8,500 cyclists on the roads together. As a cyclist myself, I am aware of the challenges that cyclists face and the challenges they present to other road users. This video will now form part of our driver training programme and will be shown to all drivers both new and existing.

We are committed to protecting the safety, health and welfare of our employees, customers and those affected by our activities such as other road users. This is echoed in the continuous development of our driver training programme and the constant search for innovative, efficient technology that will allow us produce expertly trained, competent drivers. Our drivers are trained to the higest standard and complete their world class training in our dedicated training centre in Phibsboro where all our drivers receive their Certificate of Professional Competency (CPC). In keeping with our goal of continuous improvement all our drivers refresh their driving skills every two years in our Training Centre. We also provide ongoing driving skills competency development to ensure they are providing an efficient, reliable and safe service to all our customers.

Only by continuously investing in the development of our bus drivers are we in a position to provide the people of Dublin with the safest public transport service that can be delivered.
